Should a Man Cover His Head In Salah (Prayer)?

Question:

What is the stance of Shafi’i madhhab on the covering of the head with a kufi/hat during salah? Is it obligatory, encouraged, mustahhab, etc.?

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

According to Ibn Hajar al-Haytami, uncovering the head (for a man, non-pilgrim) is disliked [makruh] in prayer, as is found in Tuhfat al-Muhtaj vol. 2, pg. 162. Shaykh Sulayman al-Kurdi related it in al-Hawashy al-Madaniyyah vol. 1, pg. 296 too.

And, Allah Ta'ala knows best.
